Creating Darkroom Art

Inside the darkroom at S&C Design Studios, we explore a variety of printing processes to create original artwork. The techniques vary to give each series of work a unique look, though they all have the foundation of traditional black and white photographic printing. Everything is handmade by the artists.

Bromoils

A classic technique, bromoils fuse the art of photography and painting. A black and white photograph becomes a hand-painted print that is created with lithographic ink, and each one is truly original. The process is long and requires attention to every detail, but the results are worth every minute.

Chemigrams

Building on a very interesting alternative photography process, Shannon’s series of Chemigrams is simultaneously whimsical, mysterious, and captivating. How can we incorporate such vivid colors in a black and white photograph? Those are secrets we’ll keep in the darkroom.

Darkroom Abstracts

Breaking rules we know too well…it is what happens a lot in the darkroom arts. Read into these pieces what you want (don’t ask us “What is it?” because we won’t tell - that is for you to decide).

Classic B&W Photographs

Ah, back to our roots…a traditional black and white photograph is simply something you cannot forget. There’s a special experience to viewing these pieces in person on paper…the tones, the contrast, the grain, the raw nature of photography at it most basic and historical. Film, paper, chemistry…that’s it.
